Concrete Waterproofing- A Brief Summary of Methods & Materials

Making concrete waterproof means water passage has to be prevented and also resistance to hydrostatic pressure has to be increased. Waterproofing can be carried out for the interior, exterior and from within the concrete too.

Technological advancements have allowed all the present technologies to improve and thus create a stronger barrier to water ingress. These methods are commonly used by waterproofing contractors in Thane so let us check them out:

Sheet Membrane Systems:

The sheet membrane (Cold applied polymer-modified bitumen) is made up of polymer materials enhanced with asphalt and connected to a polyethylene sheet. The polymer is unified with asphalt thus creating a highly viscous and a temperature-resistant elastic material as compared to asphalt as a standalone. These sheets are resistant to acidic soil, have better tensile strength and improved bonding. However, installation of sheet membrane may be difficult as they require sealing, seam finishing and lapping. Also they need to be applied on a smoothly finished surface for it to last long.

Liquid Membrane Systems:

These membranes can be applied using a roller, brush or a squeezee and support ease of application to a great extent. They contain hot or cold applied polymeric asphalt or urethane in a solvent base and can be easily applied on the positive side of concrete. It is necessary to avail of highly skilled labour for its application since an even and uniform coat with the right amount of thickness is necessary. These Liquid-applied membrane cannot endure foot traffic and weaken when exposed to UV radiation.

Admixtures:

Waterproofing techniques got a boost when admixtures become an integral part of the concrete itself. These admixtures were added to the concrete on-site and they were able to react chemically to it. This turned the concrete into a water resistant force by itself instead of create a barrier on its exterior. Concrete waterproofing methods can be crystalline admixtures, water-repellents and densifiers. The densifiers creates a by-product after it reacts with the calcium hydroxide formed during hydration, which boosts concrete density and slows down water ingress.

Crystalline admixtures:

This type of admixture utilizes the water content in the concrete to grow crystals inside the cracks, therefore closing all paths for the concrete-damaging moisture. They are available in a dry powdered form and do not contain any VOCs.

Selecting the perfect concrete waterproofing method is the key to the completion of a project on time and every provider professional Waterproofing services in Mumbai realizes its importance and makes careful decisions at this highly critical juncture in construction.
